Superleague will have to wait for Glens

Darren Thomson celebrates his equalising goal

Darren Thomson celebrates his equalising goal

Dundee Violet 3, Glenrothes Juniors 1

This do or die game had the Glens making one change from the previous week with MacRae replacing Anderson.

In the first minute John Martin had what looked like a perfectly good goal chalked off by the assistant referee for offside. Glenrothes were awarded a promising free kick twenty five yards out but Martin struck it against the wall, whilst at the other end Violet’s McConnachie broke clear and a superb last ditch tackle from the impressive Greirson
saved the day.

The Glens then won a free kick in a dangerous position. Martin forced the keeper into parrying the ball for a corner from which he then headed wide. But it was the home side who took the lead with a simple goal - the Glens defence failed to deal with a corner kick and O’Connor was on hand to tap the ball home.

Glens had an opportunity to get back into the match when Griffin was kicked in the face by Moodie right on the eighteen yard line but Johnny MacRae struck the free kick straight into the arms of Hutchison in the home goal.

The second half started with the home side on the front foot and an effort from McIvor went just wide of the post. At the other end a cross from Kinnes found Celentano but his shot was deflected wide for a corner. From the corner a powerful header from Pearson was cleared off the Dundee line. Within a minute the Glens had equalised when a shot from Darren Thomson on what was his last appearance for the Glens before his return to Oz, found the corner of the net.

Glenrothes were now looking for the winner and two minutes later an excellent chance fell to Celentano but he somehow managed to put the ball wide. Then a fine move between MacRae and Patterson finished with them winning a corner, which came to nothing. Another chance went begging when Napier shot wide and he came close again when his header went just over the bar.

The Glens were now creating chance after chance but none would fall kindly for them. John Martin broke clear but a last-ditch tackle from Syme saved the day for the Violet.

On 70 minutes and against the run of play Mair beat the offside trap to shoot past Smith and put Violet into the lead and in the eighty second minute the home side killed the game, scoring their third when Substitute Norrie lashed the ball home from twenty yards out.

The last chance fell to the Glens when a well struck free kick by Simpson was plucked out of the air by Hutchison. The referee blew for time, the Glens had fallen at the last hurdle and would have to wait till next season to try for promotion to the Super league.
