Tayport run riot in second half

Tayport 5, North End 0

THE new-look Tayport played their first competitive fixture of the 2012-13 season on Saturday when they hosted Dundee North End in a DJ Laing League Cup sectional tie.

There was little to choose between the sides for the first hour of the contest, but the introduction of striker Simon Murray sparked the Canniepairt outfit into life and they ran out comprehensive winners.

In the first half, Iain Ross was called into action more often than opposite number, Mark Fotheringham.

Midway through the half, the ‘Port ‘keeper pushed away a McComiskie free kick and later saved from Deuchars, who found himself in a good position.

Ross also stopped another free kick on the half hour, and the hosts were fortunate that their visitors failed to convert the rebound.

At the start of the second half, North End’s Njie had a golden opportunity, but lacking in conviction, he allowed Ross to make a comfortable save.

While ‘Port had had a few chances in the first half, it was the arrival of Simon Murray which really began to stretch the visiting defence.

In fact, Murray netted with his first touch, having entered the fray on the hour mark.

Fraser Milligan played the ball across goal and the substitute fired his shot past Fotheringham to give Tayport the lead.

A few minutes later, Murray was involved again, enabling Stefan Elvin to deliver for veteran Paul Tosh, who stretched to net the second counter of the afternoon from close range.

On 70 minutes, tenacious midfielder Barry Donachie made an unlikely surge to the by-line and found Stefan Elvin, who emphatically drilled home number three.

Five minutes later, Tosh helped himself to his second of the game, taking everyone by surprise in sending a perfect lob from distance over Fotheringham and into the back of the net.

Gary Robertson then had a goal disallowed by the match officials, before Tayport did go nap in the final minute when Murray lashed home his second goal from the edge of the area.

Tayport: Ross, Mudie, Robertson, Thomson, Tonner, Donachie, Milligan, Elvin, Tosh (Reilly), Welsh (Murray), Strachan (Tront).

North End: Fotheringham, Hutchison, Taylor, O’Neil, Henry, Ritchie, Bolland, Grier, Njie, McComiskie, Deuchars.
