Controversial world heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury has said that he can’t wait to come to Scotland.

The 27-year-old Englishman, vilified by many for his recent comments comparing homosexuality to child abuse, will meet fans at Bothwell Bridge Hotel on Saturday, February 20.

“I love Scotland and the Scottish fans,” Tyson said.

“They have a special place with me.

“I personally requested to do an event in Scotland to say a personal ‘thank you’ for all of their support through my journey to the top.

“Scotland is a country full of boxing fanatics and there’s nothing better than that.”

Entitled ‘An Evening With Tyson Fury’, the event will give fans the chance to enjoy a three-course meal before listening to Fury’s career highlights and getting the chance to question him during a half hour question and answer session.

Event organiser Frank Gilluley, boss of European Boxing Federation Scotland, said: “Tyson is the current world heavyweight champion, as big as it gets in boxing.

“He is very passionate about coming to Scotland and keen to meet his Scottish fans.

“The comments he makes are all off the cuff. He doesn’t mean anything by them. It’s showbusiness.

“What he says sells tickets and puts backsides on seats. It can be taken too seriously or out of context.

“Tyson is just putting his name out there by having a carry on when he makes these remarks.

“I don’t think any of his comments have crossed the line. I think a lot of people have overreacted.”

Fury, who beat Wladimir Klitschko last November to become unified heavyweight champion, caused more controversy just last weekend.

After watching prospective opponent Deontay Wilder retaining his WBC heavyweight title with a ninth round knockout of Artur Szpilka in New York, Fury traded insults with Wilder in the ring.

Fury’s Scottish visit next month will also see him give tips to fighters at Fighting Scots Gym in Mossend, which Frank runs.
