The early morning rain may have scared off a few runners but the more than 400 ‘charioteers’ who lined up at the West Sands on Sunday were made of sterner stuff.
As it turned out, by the start of the 2015 Chariots of Fire race, the rain had cleared and there was even some sunshine making an appearance for the prizegiving.
One of the sensations of the race was young Anna Hedley. At just 11, she showed a clean pair of heels to most of the adults in the 5km race.
She led the women’s field and crossed the line in a very impressive 19m 51s.
As well as being fastest female, Anna finished 15th overall.
Cameron Milne was the fastest male, finishing in 16m 19s.
There were a record number of runners in the event - 410 in all.
It is estimated the event raised around £6000 - almost double the amount of last year for St Andrews-based Worldwide Cancer Research.
The full results were: men - 1 Cameron Milne, 16m 19s, 2 Ben Hukins, 17m 01s, 3 Alan Hume, 18m 18m; women - 15 Anna Hedley, 19m 51s, 25 Katie Jones, 20m 42s, 30 Beverley Gibson, 21m 28s. Children’s fun run, girls - 1 Isla Hedley, 2 Ruby Methven, 3 Kate Dalglish; boys - 1 Jack Shively, 2 Lewis Donnelly, 3 Scott Christie.
