'Original thinker' celebrated by St Andrews Burns Club

''THERE is no doubt that Burns was an original thinker, but one can be equally certain that he was influenced by the objectivity of David Hume, Adam Smith and the other great minds of the Enlightenment time.''
So said Dr David Martin when he delivered a comprehensive 'Immortal Memory' at St Andrews Burns Club's annual supper in the Scores Hotel last Friday evening.

In summing up his tribute to Robert Burns, he added: ''The epoch-making insights of these men are unknown to the vast majority but their philosophy is, because it was simplified and put into accessible expression in Burns' work.''
