Recognition for St Andrews 'landgirl'

FORMER 'Landgirl' Mrs Mary Burns took a trip down memory lane this week to celebrate receiving official recognition for her service to her country during the Second World War.
Women who worked the land to keep Britain supplied with food and timber in the Women's Land Army (WLA) and the Women's Timber Corps (WTC) can apply for a badge and certificate commemorating their efforts.
Mrs Burns received hers recently and told the Citizen she was "very proud" to have the recognition for what she and her colleagues did.
A special certificate, signed by Prime Minister Gordon Brown, expresses the Government's "profound gratitude" for Land Army and Timber Corps members' unsparing efforts at a time when their country depended upon them for its survival.
Her grandson James Bone's grey 'Fergie' might not be quite the same vintage as those the 86-year-old from Tom Morris Drive occasionally drove on farms in the Mid Calder area, but she showed she hadn't forgotten how to handle it.
