A ST ANDREWS cleric will be swapping his robes for something more practical when he and his wife ride off into the sunset to help an AIDS project in Africa.
In August, Rev David Wilson, rector of St Andrew's Episcopal Church, in St Andrews, and his wife Yvonne, a nurse at the town's Memorial Hospital, will cycle from St Andrews Cathedral to Lindersfarne to raise money for the project in Namibia.

"The event is called 'Cycle for Africa' and aims to promote cycling for health and to sustain the environment; and at the same time we will be cycling for an important health project in South Africa," explained David.

The whole Wilson family could be an advert for healthy living, as they don't own a car and cycle everywhere.

The couple have cycled all over the world, clocking up thousands of miles.

However, while David and Yvonne are heading off on a tandem trip, their two children, also keen cyclists, will remain at home.

"We are going to be cycling and trying to promote some of the old pilgrim routes to and from St Andrews Cathedral," he told the Citizen.
"It should take just under a week."

David took over at St Andrew's Church 14 months ago and has settled in to the post.

He added: "It is absolutely fantastic here, the church, the school, the golf, everything. Its so friendly and, when I cycle around, I can stop and have a chat with any parishioners I meet."

There's still time to donate to the Wilson's fund-raising effort. You can pledge a donation over the phone to 01334 473344, or hand a donation into the church in Queen's Terrace.
