ST ANDREWS cathedral and castle are to be kept in the dark.
Fife Council's north east area committee on Wednesday rejected a plea from Scottish Enterprise to take over responsibility for floodlighting the historic landmarks.

The two buildings had been illuminated at night since 1996, as part of an agreement between Historic Scotland — owners of both sites — and Scottish Enterprise, who installed the lighting and took on responsibility for its maintenance and upkeep.

A third body, the St Andrews Lighting Trust, was set up in 1996 to pay for the running costs of the scheme, but they ran out of money in 2006 and there are arrears of around £3000 with Scottish Power.

The electricity supply to both buildings was cut off in autumn 2008, and Scottish Power has since been pursuing the outstanding debt with the solicitors who acted on behalf of the trust.
