ST ANDREWS' summer Sunday afternoon bandstand concerts have been given a last-minute reprieve, thanks to the determination of a Fife Councillor.
Bill Sangster, one of four representatives of the town on Fife Council, spoke out earlier this year when St Andrews Community Council decided to mothball the concerts until 2009, when they aim to plan a programme of more local events they hope will appeal to a wide audience.

However, after one of the bands, which has performed at the bandstand on the Bow Butts for the past 20 years, got in touch last week, Councillor Sangster pledged to help them and to do his best to keep the weekly events going throughout the summer.

On Sunday, 'Steamer Lane' a south-Fife group performed 60s harmonies in the style of the Beach Boys and The Drifters with some of their own compositions watched by visitors and local people.

If you missed them on Sunday, you can hear them at Letham Glen in Leven on August 3 and at Craigtoun Park on August 17. Both performances are at 2.15 p.m.

Later Councillor Sangster told the Citizen: "When Alan Forrester of 'Steamer Lane' contacted me about performing at the bandstand, I said I'd make sure he'd get his event on.

"I cleared it with community council chair Zoe Smith so that the group could get their expenses and she came to the concert too and gave them their cheque.

"There were quite a lot of people listening. 'Steamer Lane' will be back on August 10 and this Sunday, (August 3) we will have a local group playing Scottish music.

"We will have to take it a week at a time. Anyone local musicians wishing to perform at the bandstand can contact me on 07932798874."

Kilrymont Rotary Club has offered to meet the community council to discuss the club looking after the bandstand programme from next year, for three years.

The proposal is understood to be on the agenda for the community council's next meeting.
