NEXT week sees the unveiling of a package of high-energy dance, drama and community activities for St Andrews, set to turn the spotlight on the town’s key role in Scotland’s cultural landscape.

On Wednesday (June 6), the Byre Theatre will reveal an exciting array of acts and activities in the new programme for its bigger and better street theatre festival: ‘Inside Out,’ which runs from Friday, July 27, to Sunday, July 29.

The three-day ‘Inside Out’ festival, brings international class acts to St Andrews.

Some: ‘Nocturne’, ‘Taxi’ ‘Trolleys’ and ‘Dear Lido’ will only otherwise be seen at the opening ceremony of the Olympics.

Those Cultural Olympiad-supported companies and commissions have been performing the works in London for audiences throughout the lead-up to the London 2012 Olympics and will continue to do so throughout the Games.

Now in its fourth year, ‘Inside Out’ is breaking new boundaries with everything from ‘Parkour’ or ‘Freerunning’ around and on top of a London taxi, to the more staid – allegedly –1940s style Promenade of bathers.

Audience participation, workshops and community youth theatre merge seamlessly with high-energy dance from ‘Hip Hop’ to ‘Street’, acrobatics and a specially-commissioned joint performance from the Byre Young Dance Company and Errol White Dance Company in a whirl of activity aimed at encouraging passers-by and shoppers to get involved.

Venues include the green in front of Madras College in South Street, Market Street and Church Square, with other impromptu ‘stages’ expected to pop up across the town centre.

Organisers are confident this year’s ‘Inside Out Festival’ will be the best yet, thanks to sponsorship from EventScotland and Kingdom FM.

The latter will host a road show showcasing up and coming bands throughout the festival.

Ahead of next week’s programme launch, Byre chief executive Jacqueline McKay said: “We are all delighted with the calibre of acts taking part in our ‘Inside Out’ festival this year.

“Many of the artists are truly international and our new programme illustrates what a fantastic mix of talent we have coming to St Andrews.

“I am sure this event will attract many lovers of theatre and the arts to the town, boosting local businesses and adding a carnival atmosphere to summer in St Andrews.”
