Fife director's new production of hit musical

A Fife director and playwright is taking the helm of a much-loved musical as part of Pitlochry Festival Theatre’s new season.

Cora Bissett (The Singer, Dundee Rep Theatre and Glasgow Girls, Raw Material), is to direct a new production of Dolly Parton’s much-loved musical 9 to 5.

Based on the iconic 1980 film and set to the late Dolly Parton's Grammy-nominated score, 9 to 5 follows Violet, Judy, and Doralee: three co-workers pushed to breaking point by their sexist, egotistical boss, Franklin Hart Jr.

Fed up with being overlooked, underpaid, and undermined, they hatch a plan to get even and accidentally end up running the company far better than he ever did.

Bissett’s own journey began when she answered an advert to join a band, Darlingheart, who were part of a thriving indie music scene in and around Kirkcaldy circa 1990.

It would eventually lead to a career in theatre where she has directed and starred in a string of acclaimed, award-winning shows, starting with her debut Roadkill and the award-winning, autobiographical What Girls Are Made Of.

The production of 9 to 5 will take on an new poignancy following the death of Dolly Parton earlier this year.

It will run from May 1-29 next year.

Also part of the programme is Eden McIntyre’s debut stage play about the celebrated Fife artist Jack Vettriano - Jack Vettriano Can't Paint!.

Alan Cumming, Artistic Director of Pitlochry Festival Theatre, said: “I’m so excited that our ‘27 season is celebrating icons like Dolly Parton and as well as spotlighting new Scottish writing and indeed launching the career of a new Scottish playwright!

“These works alongside the previously announced Supernova with myself and Ewan McGregor, make for a season that is both innovative and familiar, international, and home grown and embodying the eclectic personality of the new era of Pitlochry Festival Theatre.

“And gird your loins – there’s more to come!”
