Grain and Sustain, which has enjoyed great success selling dry goods with an eco-friendly ethos, is set to expand into the Merchant’s Quarter, as part of the Adam Smith Global Foundation Enlightenments Hub.

The move, which comes just a few weeks after Burntisland fishmonger C Sinclair announced plans to open in Kirkcaldy, will see Grain and Sustain also selling some fresh produce starting in the next few weeks.

Grain and Sustain is the first tenant at the Enlightenments Hub - a venture which has seen a disused shop space completely revamped to help rejuvenate the High Street.

As well as store cupboard ingredients on refill, the new Grain and Sustain store will also be selling fresh fruit and veg, eggs and bread.

Enlightenments will have a cafe and spaces for artists and crafters to showcase and sell their work, and also provides a space for Kirkcaldy Foodbank.

Owner and Founder, Louise Humpington said that the shop would also be creating a job opportinuty by taking on an apprentice: “One of the things that we feel is crucially important in operating as an ethical business is to recognise the role we have to play in creating space for young people to gain experiences that will allow them to access the job market.

“We also have a strong focus on food security and ensuring that the goods we sell are ethically sourced from field to fork.

“That not only means that they have been produced in an ethical manner, but also that everyone along that supply chain is treated fairly and paid a fair wage.”

The Adam Smith Foundation aims to create opportunities for young people and small local businesses.

Foundation Trustee Iain Macdonald said: “We are delighted that Grain and Sustain will be our anchor retail tenant in Enlightenments especially as their ethical and social values chime closely with us.

“Grain and Sustain will start operating from September 26 and I am sure other ventures will quickly follow, taking space in Enlightenments which otherwise they would be unable to afford.

“Along with the development of the Adam Smith Centre and its garden, this is another step in using the legacy of Adam Smith to assist in the revitalisation of Kirkcaldy’s merchant quarter.”

Grain and Sustain will also be opening at Bowhouse in St Monans, on September 12 to coincide with the September Market Weekend.

The shop will be used partly as a production space and partly for people to come and do their usual grocery shopping.

People will be able to go along with their own containers to refill from over 250 different products.
