The Enlightenments, the new enterprise arm of the Adam Smith Global Foundation, which opened in September, is offering locals the opportunity to work in their premises in the town’s Merchants Quarter.

People can take advantage of desk space, free WiFi and lunch (soup and a sandwich) in a three-hour time slot for just £15.

Iain Macdonald, lead trustee on the project, explained why they decided to offer the workspace.

“The whole idea behind Enlightenments as a social enterprise hub is to offer physical space to people who work themselves in arts and crafts as well as bigger spaces for those who want to have a small retail offering, particularly people starting out in a new business who can’t afford a whole shop,” he said.

"We are seeing quite a few people coming in for a coffee and using their laptops. A lot of people have don’t feel it is right for them to stay too long so we thought that since we still have some space to use up why not set a few tables aside and allow people to have a three-hour session for £15 which includes lunch.

"It has had some take-up already so hopefully it will take off. I think it is a really good idea.”

He continued: “We are quite a quiet place and it gives people a break from being in the house – so it should be quite a popular idea. It is also helping people who are trying to develop their own wee business, so it fits in very well with what we are trying to do at the hub.

"It is a pleasant environment and people can feel very comfortable there.

"And we have room to expand it if it gets busier than what we are expecting, taking social distancing into account too.”

He added: “The Merchants Quarter has quite a few new shops and businesses starting up, like ourselves, and so this is an attractive option for people who are thinking of striking out on their own and have ideas they want to explore.”
