East Neuk bakery helps community

An East Neuk bakery has cared for the community during the Covid-19 crisis.

Barnett’s Bakery of Anstruther has been making sure that its products have been getting to those who need it, while also donating items to local causes.

In mid-March, the bakery started offering a free delivery service to the most vulnerable and elderly customers in the community who were unable to visit the shops.

Then, in early April it began offering free delivery for all of its customers in the East Neuk, not just the vulnerable.

Mhorag Barnett said: “We have also been donating bakery goods to Cupar Children and Families Social Work Team to help feed local families during this time of crisis. They’re able to choose from a selection of breads, savouries and cakes.

“This has been achieved while maintaining the essentials in all of our shops. We’ve also been able to keep up with the pick-me-ups too: there have been extra cupcakes and cream cakes every day, which have been selling faster than we can keep up.”

While baking products have been selling out at supermarkets, Barnett’s has also been selling three types of flour, dried yeast and jars of sourdough starter.

Mhorag paid tribute to the customers and staff at the bakery, adding: “The response from our customers has been phenomenal. Baking is a passion and that keeps us going at a time like this.

“Throughout this, our shop staff and bakers have gone above and beyond, and for the excellent team around us, we are incredibly grateful.”
