Ex-forces HGV trainer drives new ambitions in Fife

A former armed forces HGV instructor has turned military discipline into a thriving driving school, and is now helping to shape the future of transport in Fife and across Scotland.

After serving in the military, Kirkcaldy business owner Paul Guyan sought a new challenge that would allow him to apply his leadership and logistics experience closer to home.

The end result was Direct HGV Driver Training, a Mitchelston-based driver training firm built around the values Paul carried with him after leaving the armed forces: discipline, commitment, and a desire to improve people's lives.

Wanting to make a difference to work opportunities across the local area, Paul designed a training programme focused on the practical skills drivers need to build a successful career in the transport and logistics sector.

Since its inception, at the very start of the business, the main focus has been on safety, confidence, and capability behind the wheel.

Paul, speaking of his work ethos, said: “For me, it’s simple, we train drivers to be safer, more confident, and more capable, with superb pass rates. We’re strengthening the entire industry at the same time as improving the life opportunities for all our trainees”

Since its launch in 2024, the business has grown and now operates satellite yards in Kinross, Falkirk, Perth and Bishopbriggs. The wider expansion has made it far easier for drivers across the region to access high-quality training without travelling long distances.

Paul now works with six self-employed instructors and has recently appointed his first permanent employee, an administrator, to support increasing demand.

Business Gateway Fife, business adviser Graeme Currie who has supported the company’s development, said: “We are currently identifying opportunities for working efficiencies and exploring engagement with Fife’s Employability team through Opportunities Fife to support job training pathways.

"Discussions on a growth strategy are ongoing too,”

Direct HGV Driver Training offers Class 2 and Class 1 licences, Category D coach training, CPC courses and refresher programmes, covering the full range of qualifications that a driver needs to progress in the industry.
