Fife farmer pays record-breaking price for pure-bred Suffolk lamb

A Fife farmer has paid a record-breaking price for a seven-month-old lamb.

The pure-bred Sufflok ram cost 50,000 guineas when it was sold to Stewart Craft from Leslie for his Lakeview Pedigree Suffolks flock.

In doing so it became the first member of the Mullinvale Suffolk Sheep flock from Donegal, Ireland, to be sold in Scotland since it was established in 2016.

It has been anticipated the lamb would fetch around £25,000-30,000 when auctioneers Lawrie & Symington put it under the hammer.

However, a number of factors, such as bloodline and breeding, as well as ‘bitter competition’ between buyers pushed the price up.

With a guinea currently being valued at £1.05 this meant it more than doubled the lower estimate.

A spokesperson for the auctioneers said that rams “met a blistering trade from the off”.
