Fife hotel seeks green light to keep ‘lifeline’ beer garden

A Fife hotel is seeking permission to keep the garden which it described as a financial lifeline during lockdown restrictions.

Drummonds in Markinch has turned its car park into an alfresco area for customers, and it has now applied for retrospective planning permission from Fife Council for it to stay.

The Balbirnie Street business said it kept them afloat last year.

In a supporting letter, it stated: “The addition of a beer garden has been critical to the survival of the hotel over the last year.

“It provided us with a financial lifeline throughout the pandemic

“We used it temporarily over the summer, and feedback from customers and residents was extremely positive.

“It has sustained 14 jobs and if trading returns in 2021 to pre-pandemic levels, we believe we can support up to 30 full and part-time jobs.”

The hotel said it had “created a city centre feel in Markinch” for the benefit of all.

Councillors will consider the application in due course.
