A Fife youth arts group is looking to develop a former car showroom into a new base in St Andrews.

Byre Youth Theatre wants to pull its operations together under one roof by converting premises in the town’s Largo Road.

It wants to change the unused offices and showroom - formerly home to Central Motors - into a studio and offices for its performing arts tuition business

A planning application has been submitted to Fife Council to bring new life to the building which sits opposite M&S and the town’s fire station .

The not for profit theatre company – originally known as St Andrews Youth Theatre – provides drama, dance theatre and singing classes for young people and adults- as well as running training and team building sessions for schools and nurseries.

It currently runs classes at public venues across the town, but has lost its role at the Byre Theatre which is now being used by the University of St Andrews as additional lecture space for students.

A report submitted with the planning application said : “Consolidation of the activities onto one site which can accommodated all of the requirements is particularly crucial now in order to respond to the current crisis, but also to provide a permanent base for continued business development in the future.”

It is hoped that, with a permanent base, the staff of two can be expanded.

Councillors will consider the application in due course.
