Fifers have been urged to support local businesses and jobs as lockdown restrictions are lifted.

The call came from Neale Hanvey, MP for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath, in a bid to help kick-start the region’s economy after 11 weeks of severely curtailed activity.

He urging Fifers to spend their money locally as the Scottish Government announced that businesses across the country have been awarded more than £100 million through its Business Support Fund. The range of grants was designed to protect jobs, prevent business closures and promote economic recovery.

Mr Hanvey said: “Up to this point, the focus has been on making sure businesses have as much support as possible to stop them going under and to protect local jobs.

“But as we slowly lift lockdown, we need to start seriously thinking creatively about how we rebuild our local economy, and about the value we place on local businesses.

“Just look at the tremendous effort of local firms making facemasks and PPE, like the designer Loraine Walker Couture in Kinghorn and Mirka Jankowska, the bridal dress maker in Kirkcaldy.

“The same community effort that has seen us through this difficult period will now be needed to get the Fife economy up and running again.

“That’s why I’m calling on everyone in the Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath constituency to, wherever possible, spend your money locally by using the services provided by our local businesses.”
