The new Stephens branch will be built on Turpie Road, on part of the Aldi car park, after councillors on the Central and West Planning Committee approved the proposals.

It will include a drive-thru, giving customers the chance to pick up their favourite products without having to get out of the car. People will also be able to buy in-store, although there would be no seating.

It is hoped the new bakery will create around 20 jobs and will operate between 6am-10pm from Monday-Sunday.

Stephens expect that around 500 motorists will use the drive-thru service every day.

Councillor David Alexander said: “I’d imagine that some of the 500 expected customers they’re expecting will be coming across from Diageo.

“They’ll be walking over there to get their food and then walking back.

“I don’t see the amount of traffic being generated from that will increase the 500. It’s going to be pedestrians.”

New car parking spaces will be created, which will be shared with the Aldi store. Two electric car charging points will also be included.

The application was put to councillors because six letters of objection were submitted.

It is feared the bakery could take away business from the existing shops and block the view of the stores from the main road.

Some of the objections suggested that the bakery be built closer to the town centre.
