New eco-friendly food delivery service starts in Fife town

Food fans in St Andrews can now order grub from local restaurants without having to worry about the environmental impact, thanks to a new business.

Students at the University of St Andrews have started ecoeats, which aims to make food delivery greener.

The deliveries are being made by cyclists, meaning there are no emissions.

The company has already partnered up with some restaurants in the town, including Blackhorn and Shawarma House.

Phil Houseley, who founded the company with Stewart McGown, came up with the idea after spending time as a rider for another food delivery firm.

“One problem was that I would find myself in the square earning no money because there are more riders and not enough orders,” he said.

“In St Andrews you can do everything on a bike. It is a fantastic place for us to start.”

Phil also stated that some food delivery firms ask for a higher proportion of the money from smaller restaurants than bigger chains, and that ecoeats wanted to create a more “level playing field”.

“We’re trying to help local restaurants compete,” he explained.

“We want to give back to the local community as well.”
