Restaurants in St Andrews are bidding to take their trade outdoors to comply with social distancing.

Several planning applications have been submitted to Fife Council by businesses in the town to create external seated areas in a bid to limit the impact of reduced numbers allowed under current pandemic restrictions.

The local authority has given approval to The Adamson on South Street to create a new outdoor area.

It will use pavement space outside the premises for a beer garden and informal dining, and feature a timber hut and marquee.

The council gave approval for it to be put in place until April 2021.

Similar plans have now been lodged by two other prominent restaurants.

Forgans and Mitchells in Market Street has applied for permission for a relaxation agreement over its outdoor seating.

And The Doll’s House on Church Square, owned by the G1 Group, is seeking similar approval.

The plans will be considered in due course.
