Union says key measures must be in place before economy re-opens

However, Unite has also warned that a rush to open up economic sectors should be avoided to prevent risk to workers or members of the public.

Unite has repeatedly called for tracing and testing to be fully operational, with personal protective equipment available and social distancing procedures followed. The union also says home working should continue where possible.

Scottish secretary Pat Rafferty said: “Unite Scotland broadly welcomes the priorities set by the Scottish Government on establishing safety first through the joint statement.

“However, while we need to fully prepare for sectors of the economy being re-opened, Unite is adamant that tracing and testing systems must be fully operational.

“Workers must also be provided with personal protective equipment and social distancing must continue to be adhered to. The practicalities of these challenges will unfold such as in the public transportation system when the lock-down measures are relaxed and those companies who can’t guarantee these tests should remain closed.”
