At least ten schools and associated nurseries had been closed partially or in full on Wednesday due to flooding and damage caused by the weather the previous night.

Others saw changes to the plans including later starts for some pupils.

The deluge came as school children were due to be back in the classroom for the first time after almost five months away due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a tweet on Wednesday night, Carrie Lindsay, Fife Council’s education chief said: “Well, today didn’t quite go according to plan.

"The storm meant a number of our schools were unable to open today.

"I know how upsetting that was for lots of our children and young people but we’ve pulled out all the stops and almost all schools are open tomorrow.”

And a tweet from Fife Council on Wednesday night confirmed the situation for parents and pupils. It said: “Confirmation only Freuchie Nursery and St Paul's RC Primary will be closed tomorrow (13/08/20), after last night's storms.

"All other schools, which were damaged or flooded, will be open tomorrow. It'll be great to welcome all our children back.....at last.”
