They say that if you work doing what you love, then it’s the best job in the world. And if you can make a career from being a photographer, sound or screen producer or from working in film, TV or radio, then for many that would be a dream come true.

In Scotland, pre-pandemic, over 71,000 people were employed within the creative industries sector, which is believed to be worth around £4 billion a year to the Scottish economy.

The creative industries, like all sectors, were impacted by the pandemic but that hasn’t stopped new and exciting job opportunities being created in the sector as the world returns to some form of normality. Demand for creative talent is again on the rise. At Fife College, there is a whole range of courses on offer that can help open the door to a vibrant and fulfilling career in the creative industries.

Range of creative courses

Part-time and full-time courses, including creative media courses such screen production, visual communications, sound production, photography and media and communications are all available at Fife College’s campuses across the region.

With custom-built studios, the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through placements, and knowledgeable and industry-experienced lecturers, Fife College has everything students need to become successful contributors and producers in the creative sector.

Creative degrees

What’s more, Fife College offers the opportunity to continue creative media studies up to degree level too. Those completing an HNC, the equivalent of the first year of a degree, or HND, the equivalent of the second year, can progress to a creative degree course at one of the College’s many partner universities so there is no need to move away to university or commit to a degree course for four years – you can study locally, take one year at a time, and gain a qualification for every year of study.

The College also offer an innovative BA (Hons) degree in Creative Enterprise for those on creative industries courses. Developed in partnership with Queen Margaret University, the Creative Enterprise degree allows students to take HN studies right through to the Honours degree level, all while still at the College.

Open to those who complete an HND in a range of creative subjects, the two-year multi-disciplinary programme equips students with the practical skills and expertise they need to transform their creative passion and talent, such as photography or podcasting, into a sustainable freelance career.

From day one students are encouraged to start developing their commercial and business skills and each module has been designed to support them in creating a business model that will work. In the final year, students create a fully developed business plan rather than a dissertation for their honours project, to help prepare them for a successful career path
