‘Inspirational’ Fife school rector to retire this summer

An ‘inspirational’ Madras College rector is to retire this summer, after seven years at the school.

Tributes have been paid to David McClure, who will be retiring in August, praising the improvement in school exam results during his time at the helm and his role in securing a new Madras College.

Mr McClure told the Citizen he felt it was time to “refresh” and face “different challenges”.

He started as a probationer teacher in 1974, just after the raising of the school leaving age, meaning he was working with children who were ready to leave school before finding out they had to stay. It was the first of many challenges.

He taught mathematics during strikes in the ‘80s, curricular changes in the ‘90s, the Curriculum for Excellence in the ‘00s, and the merging of education and social services in the ‘10s.

His first leadership role was as principal teacher of maths at Doon Academy, and then Stewarton Academy in Ayrshire. His first role in Fife was as depute at Buckhaven High School before becoming head teacher. He then moved to Madras to take on the same role in 2013.

Among his proudest achievements during his time at Madras, Mr McClure cited helping the school secure a very good inspection report in 2015, building an ethos of learning for all, watching school exam results improve every year, and restructuring the school week to meet the “Draconian” cuts while safeguarding the “outstanding curriculum”.

The new Madras College was also finally approved during his time as rector.

“It is good to know that finally there will be a building to replace the current tired structure,” Mr McClure said.

“I do not think anything can ever replace the uniqueness of the old school but times move forward and a new building has long been needed. So it is good to see that this is almost a reality and one which places the school on a fantastic site for future generations.”

“We should never take things for granted,” Mr McClure said. “Life is short but abounds with experiences and pleasures; we should always try to remain positive and make the most of all that comes our way.

“In particular, I would like to say that it has been a privilege to have been rector of Madras College. So many of you have supported me in my endeavours and I will truly remember with overwhelming fondness the individual acts of kindness you shared with me.

“What you have done at Madras has always been based on values and not targets, you have always gone that extra mile for the school – which makes Madras the great school it is.”

Cllr Linda Holt paid tribute to Mr McClure, describing him as a “outstanding, inspirational teacher”, adding: “He has raised attainment during a time of unprecedented financial challenges. David will be sorely missed by pupils, staff, parents and the community.”
