Row over new sports pitch at Fife school

A petition has been launched calling for a 2G sports pitch at the new Madras College.

The original plans for the school included the plans for a sand-dressed (2G) pitch which formed part of the proposed sports facilities.

However, the current plans contain provisions for two 3G pitches, with the school having access to the University of St Andrews hockey pitches for nine hours per week.

A 2G pitch would be suitable for competitive hockey for pupils over S3, would mean they would not have to travel to the university to play and would be less expensive.

There are concerns also concerns about the impact this could have on hockey in the area, with governing body Scottish Hockey and hockey groups raising their concerns.

Councillors recently rejected the chance to review the decision.

MSP Willie Rennie, who launched the petition, said: “I am supporting concerned parents and sports people who want a review of the decision to not build a 2G hockey pitch at the new Madras College.

“The council plans to build two 3G pitches instead, even though they are more expensive and are not suitable for most hockey training and matches.

“Hockey is a popular sport especially for women and girls. I, also, worry that a lack of local provision and facilities will result in children and young people having to travel to play their home games.

There is also a broader concern of the impact this might have on sport participation amongst our young people.

“It would be sensible to have an independent expert review of this decision to make sure we get the right sports facilities for our new school.”

Rachel Philp, a hockey coach, added: “We are concerned that the best option for a diverse range of sports has not been properly researched or considered.”

She added: “An independent review would ensure that precious public funds are spent wisely and that the fantastic new asset can bring the widest benefit to the whole community.”

Cllr Jonny Tepp said: “There is a strong case for a 2G pitch and we want to be absolutely sure that the right decision is being made.

“Councillors have a duty to ensure that Fife Council is obtaining the best value for public money and that is why we are supporting this call for an external expert review.”
