That is the opinion of MP Wendy Chamberlain, who has written to student accommodation providers to call for safe return of students in autumn.

Following concerns being raised by constituents on the safe return of students to St Andrews, Ms Chamberlain has written to student accommodation providers Bradburn & Co, Delmer, Homes for Students, Intracrine Properties, Lawson & Thompson Ltd, Rollo’s and Braemore for assurances on their safe return.

“I fully support the safe return of students and I have been in contact with the University of St Andrews,” she said.

“I believe as consistent an approach as possible across different providers will be most beneficial to both students and the community. I have asked these accommodation providers to outline the policies and procedures they will be putting in place, to ensure the safe return of students.

“I believe a balanced and safe approach can be taken to ensure the safe return of students.”

The new academic year at the university is due to begin on September 14.

Orientation Week begins on September 7, and the Halls of Residence are due to be ready to welcome students from August 24.

MSP Willie Rennie added: “We have worked constructively with the government, the Fife Council, the University of St Andrews and local businesses throughout the pandemic. As we ease the restrictions and life begins to return to normal, we must ensure that we are cautious that we do not lose sight of the effort needed to remain safe.

“The virus is not yet gone and the actions and planning we undertake now will be integral to keeping our communities safe until it is.

“We must thank the work of all the residents who have been so careful these last few months and commend Stay Safe St Andrews and the university on the hard work and the comprehensive plans they have put forward to keep us safe when the student return.”
