Their decision came after Forth View Care Home in Methil announced similar restrictions.

On Thursday night, one of the major care home providers also announced it was closing its doors to all but non essential visitors while concerns remained over coronavirus.

Abbotsford Care runs homes across the region – from Cowdenbeath, to East Wemyss, Kirkcaldy, Methil, Kinglassie, Glenrothes and Newburgh.

It has informed families of its decision to restrict access to its homes from Monday, March 16.

It said: “As an organisation we must take steps to minimise risk to our elderly and vulnerable residents and have therefore decided from Monday we will be closed to all non essential visitors. We do appreciate this will be a difficult time for everyone but hope you understand why such measures have had to be taken. “

The home said a staff member will be assigned to contact the named nominated next of kin on a regular basis to ensure they are kept up to date with the health and well being of relatives.

It will also issue updates via email and post to keep them informed of progress, and changes for access to the homes.

The statement added: “If, at any point, your relative becomes acutely ill during this period of restrictive visiting we will work with you on how to allow for you to spend essential time with your loved one. This will be restricted to one family member who can confirm no links to the virus through travel or contacts.

It also asked families to share links to social media platforms such as Whats App, Facetime and Messenger to allow them to maintain contact.
