The statistics come ahead of a statement from First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, on a possible Scotland-wide ban on all large gatherings of 500 people or more.

That is expected to come late afternoon, and any order could take effect from Monday as the Scottish Government steps up its response to try to contain the virus.

Such a move would have a huge impact on a wide range of organisations from sports clubs to theatres and big-scale events such as the Links Market which is due to take place in Kirkcaldy next month.

In Kirkcaldy, the Festival of Ideas, scheduled for the end of March, has been rescheduled for late summer. It was due to feature national treasure Joanna Lumley in conversation, a fun day for families, and a food and drink fair. All elements have been cancelled.

The Alhambra Theatre in Dunfermline has also confirmed that a gig by Adam Kay, scheduled for Saturday, was also off after the comedian scrapped his entire UK tour until October.

In terms of sport, a ban would impact on title-chasing Raith Rovers’ derby against East Fife planned for next weekend.

NHS Fife has already created a drive-thru testing facility at Cameron Hospital, Leven.

It is open only to people who have been assessed by their GP and given an appointment by Public Health – but health bosses are expecting a sharp spike in the number of people seeking tests in the coming weeks.
