Headteacher Derek Allan sent an email to parents and carers of those affected this morning to inform them.

He said: “We are now in the unfortunate position, due to very significant staff absence, of having to close the school for pupils in S1 and S2 tomorrow (Thursday) and on Friday.

“Please keep your son/daughter at home tomorrow and on Friday if they are in first or second year.

“Please note that all S1/S2 pupils who qualify for free school meals are welcome to join us in school for lunch. Please remind them to bring their "MyFife" card.

“With this type of eventuality in mind, our school staff have been very proactive in planning and be preparing, including for the rest of this week and a potential longer term school closure in the near future.

“We are asking all our pupils not to leave their resources (jotters, booklets, notes etc) in classrooms or lockers, and ask that they should be taken home each day. In the event of any further closure, we will use the Groupcall email (or text) and social media (Twitter @KirkcaldyHigh) to keep in touch with you.

“Pupils are asked to ensure that they can access GLOW, Show My Homework, Scholar, Microsoft Teams and the other online platforms we are using.”

Speaking to FifeToday, Mr Allan said: “We had no option in the end. Safety is important and the staff have been terrific in helping us get to this point so far. “But with so many being in isolation or being unwell, we were unable to continue. I would like to pay tribute to the staff for going the extra mile and covering to this point.”

He added that Kirkcaldy High will remain open for S3-6 and offered his best wishes to those pupils undertaking SQA assessments in Art and Design, PE or Music this week.
