Kirkcaldy mum starts community food collection point
A mum from the Linktown in Kirkcaldy has started a community food collection point in her street to help anyone who may be struggling to get the essentials during the coronavirus pandemic.
The impromptu collection point appeared on Marion Street last Tuesday with locals making good use of it already, as people are not only taking items that they need but are also leaving food and essentials for people who are less fortunate than themselves.

Hide AdKerryanne Rutherford is the brains behind the idea, she said: “I had seen the food collection point idea on Facebook and thought to myself that this was an excellent idea to help people in the community that might be struggling to get food or any other items that they may need.
“We had loads of tins and other items in the cupboard that we will probably never get round to eating, so I took a set of step ladders out to the street and put some tins and other things on them with a little note to say if anyone needed anything just to take it.
“The shelves are bare in a lot of shops, and some people may not get everything that they went shopping for, so if there is something on our step ladders that they need, they are more than welcome to take it.
“I think it is the thought that there are vulnerable people and older people who can’t get all the shopping that they need, it makes me feel bad for them, so this way we are able to help them”

“There are a lot of other people that need help in our community, there are mums who can’t get to the shops because they are caring for their kids and people who are self-isolating.”
The collection point has already had numerous people using it to top up their supplies and has also had people adding to it as well.
“Other people have been adding food like tinned stuff, dry food, sanitary products and toilet rolls to the step ladders, there is a bit of everything on them now.

Kerryanne goes on to say how the the excellent community spirit in the Linktown makes it a great place to stay: “The community spirit here has been absolutely amazing, everyone looks out for one another, even if there wasn’t the coronavirus, if I was unwell there would be somebody looking out for me.
“I just hope everyone stays safe and keeps healthy while they are social-distancing and the quicker that everyone stays in the quicker we can all get out.”
