Fife care home worker swore at residents and acted aggressively

Jennifer Geddes Conner, who was employed as a Care Assistant at Forth View Care Centre in Methil, called one resident “a f****** old c***”, got right up in his face and shouted “What are you going to do?”.

The incident occurred around June 2017, and was highlighted in a hearing by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) which ordered that Ms Conner be struck off.

In another incident which happened in January of the same year, Ms Conner also told one resident “shut your pus”.

At the hearing, the SSSC panel was presented with evidence from three co-workers who witnessed Ms Conner’s behaviour towards the residents, and found them to credible and reliable.

The panel also criticised Ms Conner for largely ignoring the investigation process and therefore showing no hint of remorse or willingness to remedy the situation.

In summing up its reasoning for finding her fitness to practise was impaired, the Panel said: “The Panel asked itself if the conduct has, in fact, been remediated.

"Unfortunately, your lack of engagement with the SSSC meant that the Panel had no evidence whatsoever that you have done anything to remediate your conduct.

"The Panel therefore considered that the answer to this question had to be ‘no’. Thirdly, the Panel asked itself if it was highly unlikely that your conduct would be repeated.

"Once again, your lack of engagement with the SSSC meant that the Panel simply had no evidence which would allow it to reach that conclusion.

"The Panel could not therefore be satisfied that it was highly unlikely that your conduct would be repeated.”

The Panel also said that Ms Conner should be removed in order to maintain the residents from emotional harm.

It found: “In terms of public protection, the Panel considered that a finding of impairment of fitness to practise was necessary: service users require to be protected against conduct on the part of Workers which is capable of causing them emotional harm.

"Looking at the broader public interest, it is also necessary for the public to have confidence in the social service workforce and in the SSSC as the regulatory body.”
