New Glenrothes Reminiscence Hub to help those with dementia

A new community facility has opened in Fife to help those with dementia remember past events, people and places.

Located within the grounds of Kingdom Homes’ Preston House Care Home in Glenrothes, the Reminiscence Hub stemmed from a hugely successful community reminiscence exhibition in Kirkcaldy last year.

The hub will help not only the hundreds of residents within Kingdom Homes care, but also the numerous community groups and care facilities which support those living with dementia.

The idea was initially conceived by Kenny McLachlan, care logistics manager with Co-op Funeralcare in Fife, when he decided to take some football items into local care homes, to stimulate the memories of those who would have gone to matches in their younger days.

The hub provides a place for people to meet and have a cuppa, and will house memorabilia that will prompt discussion amongst visitors who may be living with dementia, encouraging them to reminisce about the past.

Paula Paterson, Kingdom Homes events manager, said: “The Reminiscence Hub will give us the opportunity to support those living with dementia in our community. Not only will it help raise awareness of dementia, it will also help us to engage with people who wouldn’t usually communicate easily with others.

“We have been working alongside Kenny McLachlan from Co-op Funeralcare, whose own Memory Box project led us to work together to establish a likeminded partnership, which we hope will provide an invaluable resource for many years to come.

“Reminiscence sessions are a big part of our lifestyle programme at Kingdom Homes as we recognise that sharing stories and preserving memories is vital not only as a therapy for those living with dementia, but also for the heritage of our own communities.”
