"No final decision" yet on location for Central Fife's new walk-in GP clinic

The venue of a new walk-in GP clinic in Fife is still to be decided the health board has said.

Information posted on a number of social media pages recently had suggested that NHS Fife had confirmed Glenrothes town centre as the location of a walk-in GP clinic, however this week the health board has said that “no final decision” has been made on the location.

The Scottish Government initiative of opening walk-in GP clinics, where people don’t need appointments, around the country is designed to ease the early morning phone calls which swamp surgeries as people look to see a doctor.

A number of sites, from Stranraer to Shetland, have already been confirmed for walk-in clinics, and the first opened in Edinburgh earlier this year. A walk-in service in Lochee in Dundee opened in March with the service available seven days a week from noon to 8pm, with no appointment necessary.

It had previously been said a clinic is to open in Central Fife during the second phase of the country-wide project and will be run by NHS Fife.

Earlier this year it was said the new Fife site could be in operation later in 2026 or into 2027 with the suggestion it could be based in a former town centre shop, but no location had been confirmed.

Now, NHS Fife has reiterated that no decision has been made and options are still under consideration for the Central Fife site.

A spokesperson for NHS Fife said: “We are aware of a number of recent social media posts stating that NHS Fife had confirmed Glenrothes town centre as the location of the new walk-in GP clinic in Fife.

“While Glenrothes town centre was proposed as part of NHS Fife’s initial submission to Scottish Government, no final decision has yet been reached on the location of the clinic and a number of areas remain under consideration.

“Further details of the new walk-in GP clinic will be announced by NHS Fife and the Fife Health and Social Care Partnership once a location has been agreed and all necessary arrangements are in place.”

GP walk-ins are designed to complement traditional practices and urgent care, bridging the gap between the two to offer patients the opportunity to be assessed at clinics led by GPs and staffed by highly-skilled, multidisciplinary teams. Depending on clinical need, patients may see a GP or advanced nurse practitioner or another health professional.
