Pedal power for Maggie's Fife

A Kirkcaldy teenager is following in his gran's footsteps by helping to raise money for our Maggie's Centre in memory of a family member.

Cameron Allan (13), who lives with his grandparents Janice and Billy Allan in the town’s Appin Crescent, is currently training to do a sponsored cycle of 100 laps of the town’s Beveridge Park over two days in June.

Cameron is a member of the Bike Project which meets every Tuesday at the Argos Centre in Kirkcaldy and has been a keen cyclist for a few years.

Now he is planning to put his hobby to good use by getting sponsorship to raise money for the cancer caring centre in the grounds of Victoria Hospital, which Janice has supported since it first opened.

Cameron, an S2 pupil at Glenwood High School in Glenrothes, often accompanies Janice on her regular visits to the centre and both he and his gran accompanied Dr Bob Grant on one of the stages of his sponsored Bob’s Walk from Maggie’s Fife to the new Forth Valley centre at Larbert.

Janice said: “Cameron is very kind-hearted and wanted to do something to help raise funds for Maggie’s in Fife, so he decided that because he loves cycling, he would fundraise that way.”

Janice has done a number of adventurous fundraisers over the years, including a trek through the desert in Jordan and another in Uganda where she suffered a bad break to her leg.

She is returning to Uganda later this year to volunteer in Bwindi near the Impenetrable Forest to help in the Aids Centre and also Nkuringo clinic and school, and is also fundraising for Maggie’s and the Cottage Family Centre in the town.

Cameron added: “I am doing this for Maggie’s in memory of my great-grandad who died two years ago from cancer. I know the great work Maggie’s does and I just want to help.”
