Markinch woman celebrates her 105th birthday

Markinch woman Mary Robertson reached an incredible milestone on Sunday as she celebrated her 105th birthday.

Mrs Robertson was born Mary Helen Booth in the village of Foveran, Aberdeenshire, on March 1, 1915, the eldest of shoemaker William Booth and his wife Mary Walker Rearie’s four daughters.

Having left school at the age of 14 to become a maid at a local farm Mrs Robertson subsequently married William Norrie from Cruden near Peterhead on October 5, 1940.

On December 11, 1941, Mr Norrie was enlisted as a Private into the Gordon Highlanders and on September 18, 1942, their son William was born in Ellon.

On July 15, 1944, William was posted to north west Europe, but tragically ‘died of wounds’ on September 25 of that year following heavy fighting around the village of Best, 10 km north of Eindhoven.

Mrs Robertson would go on to marry Jack Robertson, who had been a Japanese POW, and together they had a daughter called Charley.

Mrs Robertson moved to Markinch 15 years ago to stay with her son William and his wife Margaret in McInnes Road.

She was visited on her birthday by Councillor Fiona Grant, who presented her with flowers on behalf of Fife Council, and Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Fife, Colonel Jim Kinloch.

Mrs Robertson’s family also threw a party for 29 family and friends including her two children, six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
