It was 20 years ago that John Hannah was cast as Rebus, and brought Ian Rankin’s famous detective to the TV screens for the very first time.

Hannah and the production crew descended on Aberdour to film some scenes ahead of its release in 2000 before returning to the capital to shoot more scenes

These images capture some of the buzz behind the cameras.

The images in Aberdour were taken by the Fife Free Press as the village enjoyed a moment in the spotlight in the company of a character still going strong to this day.

The images in Edinburgh come from the Scotsman archives.
