100 years at Buckhaven Primary: Pupils take lead role in anniversary events

Buckhaven Primary School held a double celebration to mark its 100 years in the town.

Last Friday, Pupils performed a centenary concert in Kinnear Street Community Centre - the event was formally opened by Provost of Fife Jim Leishman.

On Tuesday night the doors were thrown open for all to attend an evening which saw many former staff and pupils taking a walk down memory lane.

P7 pupils acted as tour guides, showing visitors around the classrooms which had each selected a decade from the last 100 years as a class project.

Among the visitors at the packed event was Sid Binning who was headmaster for 20 years. He said: “I can’t believe how much it’s changed physically!

“The children are bright and breezy, the staff are smiling and the whole place is alive. It’s a wonderful occasion”

Former pupils, father and son, Bert and Tom Pollock were back for the first time since Tom left in the 1960s, two decades after his father.

“It’s great being back,” Tom said. “I’ve really enjoyed it, it’s so recognisable and has brought back some really happy memories.”

Headteacher Lynn Dyas paid tribute to the pupils and their families for their enthusiasm and contributions to the celebrations.

“We’re so proud of all of children. They’ve really worked hard in learning about their decades.

“They’ve asked a lot of questions at home of their parents and carers and we really appreciate all their support around the centenary.

“The concert was a huge success and it’s been a privilege to be the headteacher during what is such an important year.”
