A young artist was so moved by the plight of refugees that she decided to put her skills to work - with a portrait marathon.

Last weekend Valeria Duca (20) set up in Taste, St Andrews, and invited people to pay to have their portrait done.

She raised more than £160, which will be donated to the Refugee Action St Andrews group, and drew around 45 portraits.

“It was a wonderful experience,” said Valeria, currently studying Art History at St Andrews University but who has exhibited widerly in her native Moldova and internationally.

“Although a lot of my friends came to support me, most of the people I didn’t know before.

“It was very difficult to draw continuously with almost no breaks but at the same time I felt like I was creating and receiving positive emotions every time I revealed the finished portrait to the person posing.”

Such was the success that she is now considering making it a regular event.
