Artist Wil Freeborn captures Fife's beauty

From castles to churches, battles to bunkers, Fife is profiling some of its most remarkable architecture to visitors to celebrate the Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design and none more so than Kirkcaldy.

Welcome to Fife website – dedicated to promoting the Kingdom – has launched an interactive, online map.

It is made up of a series of illustrations of notable buildings and landmarks by one of Scotland’s foremost artists, Wil Freeborn, to create an online guide for visitors to explore for themselves.

The beautiful watercolours are accompanied with information about each building and can be found at www.welcometofife.com/lovefifearchitecture.

Wil, encouraged to pitch for the job by Fife Council, for whom he has previously created watercolours said: “I loved doing it!

“Visiting the buildings across the county showed the amazing variety of architecture across Fife.”

Alistair Bruce, chairman of the Fife Tourism Partnership said: “The architecture in Fife is a fascinating timeline of our local history stretching from the ninth century to present day.

“This year, marking innovation, architecture and design, is a timely reminder for residents as well as visitors that some very special people, events and talents are embedded in Fife’s history.

“Many visitors to Scotland come for this historical heritage and Fife has plenty to offer them as part of our other many tourism assets.”

Encapsulated in gentle watercolour the map shows Kirkcaldy’s architectural gems: Burntisland Parish Church; The Town House, Kirkcaldy; Maggie’s Fife, Kirkcaldy; Harbourmaster’s House, Dysart.

Awe-inspiring innovation, breathtaking architecture and bold designs are being promoted this year by a series of events run by VisitScotland.
