Bumper crowds for Links Market

Boasting a mix of exhilarating new rides and equally thrilling old favourites, the longest street market in Europe has packed-up for another year.

Six days of good, old fashioned fun mixed with a host of gravity defying drops, spins and jolts, satisfied thrill seekers throughout the week.

Now in it’s 711th year, the traditional fairground brought in thousands of visitors to Kirkcaldy’s prom and was the highlight for many in the year’s events calendar.

The centuries old open-air funfair, attracted approximately 150,000 visitors during its stay at the Esplanade, which ended on Monday.

Charlie Horne, fair manager and Showman’s Guild vice chairman said: “The weather wasn’t very good on Wednesday or on Thursday and when that happens, the turnout isn’t great, so the initial footfall was slow.

“However, as the sun came out on Saturday and Sunday, visitor numbers increased and we had a better than usual turnout with Monday being even better.”

Despite the elements, Mr Horne was in no doubt that the market was “up to the usual standard”.

He said: “Overall the public had a very good time - but they always do!

“And, we had no problems or challenges this year which makes for a successful fair.”

The biggest in Scotland run by the Showman’s Guild, the Links Market brings in visitors from across the country, as well as being a local favourite.

Charlie added: “It is extremely well patronised by local people and after over 700 years of coming to Kirkcaldy I am sure we will be here again for another year!”

Working in conjunction with Police Scotland and G4S security firm and with help from St Andrews First Aid volunteers, Charlie offered special thanks to the showmen and their families and also to the first-class support from Fife Council.

“And thanks in particular to all the visitors, for another fantastic fair,” he finished.
