Burntisland pupil one of first girls to take part in footy competition

The talented 12-year-old is preparing to take on the best teams in the top schools’ competition at the Spartan’s football ground in Edinburgh in May.

And, although she says she is a “little nervous” about the big event, she knows that as soon as she steps on to the football pitch, she will forget about everything else.

Maisy has been playing since the age of seven when she went to a friend’s birthday party. Her friend’s dad who coaches the Burntisland Shipyard team, spotted Maisy’s natural skills and invited her to join the team.

Her talent has grown over the years and she now also plays for the Dunfermline Athletic 13s team and joined the school P7 team at the beginning of the season.

“I used to just have a kick about with my dad, then I joined the shipyard team and got really interested in football,” said Maisy.

“I love playing and when I am on the pitch I am just another player, they don’t bother that I am a girl.

“Some of the other teams used to make comments, but when I start to play they realise that I can play and I never have any bother.”

Danny Hubbard, a P7 teacher who coaches the school team, described Maisy as a “very gifted player”.

“The shipyard team is very well run and that has really helped her development, and Liz Anderson, the Fife Active Schools co-ordinator who is heavily involved in women’s football is monitoring her progress and believes she can go all the way,” he said.

“It’s a great achievement for the school and we’re looking forward to the finals. We’re taking the P7 pupils through to the final to support the team.”
