John and Senga Penman of Denbeath met at the bowling green dance hall more than 60 years ago, and they're still in step all this time later.

The couple, of Ward Street, have just celebrated their Diamond Wedding with a party laid on at the Balbrinie Hotel by 80 of the congregation of their local church of Jehovah’s Witnesses where they have been members for decades.

John (80) and Senga (79) were courting for several years before they married at Methil Parish Church in 1955, and they enjoyed a lot of dancing in their younger days.

“I knew her from the school and I always thought she was a braw lassie, so I was delighted when she agreed to go out with me,” said John.

They set up home in Kennoway after their marriage then moved to Denbeath, ending up back in the street that John was brought up in!

John worked as a blacksmith in the Michael Pit before moving into stone mining before it was destroyed in the fire of 1967.

After that he had a complete career change, becoming a double glazing salesman for 35 years while Senga brought up the couple’s five daughters, Avril, Louise, Audrey, Dylis and Amanda.

The couple both became followers of the Jehovah’s Witnesses and were baptised in Perth in 1962, and were delighted when they were told that the congregation of their church had clubbed together to lay on the party for their wedding anniversary, which was also attended by many other family and friends.

In his younger days, as well as the dancing, John enjoyed pottering around in his garden, while most of their spare time was taken up with church outreach work in their local area.

John said: “We would both like to thank everyone who helped make our Diamond Wedding such a special event. I got together a lot of the old tracks from our dancing days and everyone at the party was up dancing and having a great time.”
