Fife girls: #DareToBeDifferent?

The campaign, championed by Scottish racing driver Susie Wolff, aims to inspire girls to be the next generation of role models in a sport currently dominated by men.

“There are not enough girls starting at a young age, let’s not forget F1 is the absolute pinnacle of our sport and with 2000 boys and only 20 girls trying to get to F1, the chances of a girl reaching the top are very, very slim.

“This leads to the issue of a lack of role models – you have got to see it to believe it.”

The campaign aims to increase female participation, not just on the track but in every area of the sport and other perceived male-dominated industries. The programme will see 100 girls aged 8-14 from 10 local primary schools have fun at the track and hear about the various career options in motorsport, including a chance to race karts, practice broadcasting and get their picture taken in the Williams Racing F1 show car.

Susie, is from Oban and progressed through the ranks of motorsport until retiring in 2015 said: “Our events for young girls will boost awareness and demonstrate the varied and exciting areas of the sport – showing that they too can Dare To Be Different – and will hopefully provide the first stepping-stone for some of the next generation along the path to a successful motor racing career.”
