Fife man runs his own (legal) Italian job

Greg Milne, from Methil, completed the Rome Marathon, and managed to raise £1500 for Breast Cancer Care in the process.

The 24-year-old had already completed two marathons last year before this one, having done the London and Edinburgh marathons in 2015.

He also raised money for the London run - and decided to “keep the money in Scotland” - but the Edinburgh one was a challenge for himself, as you “can’t expect people to donate all the time” he said.

He impressively finished in the top half of the runners, coming in 670th out of 13884 people with a finishing time of three hours, 12 minutes and 50 seconds.

Greg described completing the race as an “amazing feeling” before adding that he “did not know what to expect” in the Mediterranean climate as his other two marathons were in the UK.

Greg has been running for three years; after “always been known as a big boy” he started going to the gym and enjoyed pushing himself further. He chose Breast Cancer Care to donate to after his grandmother tragically died of the disease.

He had completed several 10k and half-marathon runs before embarking on the full 26 mile runs.

He trained himself and is now a member of the Fife AC running club.

The race took place on Sunday, April 10 and he is already planning his next marathon in Belfast on May 2.

He was joined by his brother Calum, and friends Billy and Leanne for support, which he said was motivational when he saw them during the run.

Greg added: “It takes a lot of will power to finish a marathon, but the adrenalin keeps you going.

“It was good to get a medal and it is something to look back on. I was looking forward to a drink afterwards!”
