Fife pupils sing together for innovative project

Using GLOW, the national intranet for education, over 12,000 young voices from Kingdom primary schools united to sing ‘Believe’, Fife Youth Music Initiative’s song of the year.

A number of schools, including Parkhill and Pittenweem, gathered last Tuesday at the Lochgelly Centre for a choral singing venture, in which they learned the thought-provoking song ‘Believe’, composed by one of the UK’s best known writers of children’s songs, Lin Marsh.

This tune is widely used in schools across the country to promote aspiration and self-belief in young people.

After developing their vocal and theatrical techniques with Lin, the pupils’ live performance was streamed via GLOW to other participating schools across Fife, enabling them to join in.

Youth Music Initiative (YMI) is funded by the Scottish Government and administered by Creative Scotland, which offers good-quality music-making opportunities to all primary schools in Fife.

One of the main organisers was Ruth Craib, of St Monans, assistant YMI music co-ordinator.

Susan Harper, Parkhill’s headteacher, said: “It is an inspirational song which will remain a favourite of the pupils of Parkhill. From P1 to P7, pupils sang with enthusiasm.”
