Fife says '˜no' to racism ahead of national demo

Members of an anti-racist group in Fife have issued a strong statement of support for all foreign nationals living in Scotland following the vote to leave the European Union.

Campaign group, Stand Up To Racism (Fife), held a meeting in the St Clair Tavern in Kirkcaldy last night (Tuesday) to ‘make it clear that immigrants should not become scapegoats’ and to discuss how to stop this happening.

The event was hosted by Grant Buttars, with speakers including local councillor and Refuge Fife volunteer Marie Penman and Helen Skulina, from the Edinburgh Migrants’ Solidarity network.

Activist Maureen Closs also attended the meeting and felt it was important to show that people care.

She said: “No matter how the EU vote went, we welcome all migrant workers in Scotland and recognise the important contribution they make to society. We stand alongside them and won’t allow them to be kicked out of the UK.”

A national demonstration against racism, supported by Stand Up To Racism, will be held in Glasgow city centre on Saturday, July 16, assembling at the Buchanan Steps at 12pm.
