It’s a dish loved across the nation, but it is clear that Scotland is the place to go for fish and chips if the National Geographic list of best chip shops is to be believed.

While the popular publication has named Whitby as the best place in the UK to go, Scotland takes silver and bronze with Anstruther Fish Bar and Oban Fish and Chips rounding off the top three.

Anstruther Fish Bar is praised for the views offered over the harbour - and the proximity from fish to fryer with the publication hailing its sustainable practices and sourcing. There is a specific mention for lemon sole, the local Pittenweem prawns and line-caught mackerel as well. The magazine even hails the shop's social media handle for being spelt phonetically.

Not satisfied with having one in the top two, another Scottish establishment is listed as the third best. Oban Fish and Chips shop in Argyll and Bute however is the last Scottish entry on the list. The magazine hails the shop for being put on “people’s culinary map by BBC show Rick Stein’s Food Heroes in 2002” and praises the eatery for being another that “offers much more than just cod and haddock” with catch of the day, squat lobster, sustainable haddock and seasonal herring and mackerel getting a mention.

National Geographic list the Magpie Cafe in Whitby as the best place to go for fish and chips, with one entry from Northern Ireland, and two in Wales also making it to the top nine.
