Funds offered for WWIlegacy plans

Roger Mullin, Kirkcaldy MP, has urged people in the local constituency to think about how they would like to observe the 100th anniversary.

The occasion is a chance to understand the war, uncover its stories and look at what it means to us today.

Mr Mullin said it was an excllent opportunity to explore the legacy of the 1914-18 conflict, which had a deep impact on the constituency.

Successful projects could include those that research, identify and record local heritage, create a community archive or collection, or develop new interpretation of heritage through exhibitions, trails or smartphone apps.

People could also research, write and perform creative material based on heritage stories, or conserve and find out more about war memorials, for example.

Mr Mullin said: “I believe it is tremendously important that future generations learn about the conflict and ensure the sacrifice made by millions of people of all nationalities is never forgotten.

“There is still time to apply for National Lottery money, and I would urge anyone with an idea for their own project to get in touch with the Heritage Lottery Fund.”

Sir Peter Luff, chairman of the HLF, said the extra money was made available because of “phenomenal” demand over WWI projects.

“This will mean everyone, in particular young people, can explore the momentous events of a war that shaped our nation, Europe and the world,” he added.

“This year marks the centenary of the Battle of the Somme and, if groups want support for projects examining its impact, do think about applying now.”
